Haut Potentiel Intellectuel S05E04

Haut Potentiel Intellectuel S05E04, “L'homme au soda à moitié plein” (The Man With the Half-Filled Soda), runtime 55:10

Serge finally brings the Alvaro clan together for a day at the beach, only it's so Morgane can scatter his ashes on the English Channel. But on the train to the seaside, Morgane notices when a passenger goes missing. Stuck on the train, she sets out to manage the investigation by remote control.

Celine is trying to put out a fire regarding Morgane’s contract. Théa is wondering why Serge has left his lucky poker chip to her dad. A talkative student unwittingly provides clues to a 2023 homicide. Eliott is repulsed by the train restroom. Karadec realizes he's busted. Morgane has a brush with April Moriarty- I mean a mysterious passenger.

NOTES

Agnes refers to her cabas (00’39”), which usually means ‘tote’ or ‘tote bag.’ But in this case it’s one of those wire baskets on wheels, which is a ‘trolley.’

The funeral home employee (1’03”) is a role with no name. She's played by Domitie de Lamberterie.

Boulogne-sur-mer (1’17”) is a city on the English Channel southwest of Calais.

There is a Kia Beach in Italy, but I can’t find one in France.

1’46”: SMIC (Salaire minimum interprofessionnel de croissance) is the Guaranteed Minimum Wage, currently about €1400 net per month (35 hour work week).

Gris-gris (2’52”) means ‘gray-gray,’ but also ‘luck’ or lack thereof.

This Mont De Terre train station (4’04”) does not look like the real one next to Rue Georges Danton in Lille.

This whole train ride is filled with ambient noise, PA announcements, arguing passengers, and mumbling teenagers. I did my best.

I’m assuming the name of the PJ’s new software (6’57”) is ‘Table/Tabla 5.’ Not ‘Table Sync,’ although that would be perfect.

Case means ‘checkbox’ or ‘field.’

Serge’s casinos (10’00”):
  • Dunkirk’s is part of the chain Casino Tranchant (‘sharp’)
  • Deauville, also on the English Channel: Casino Barrière, part of a chain
  • Enghien-les-Bains: Another Casino Barrière. This is on the northern edge of Paris
  • Évian-les-Bains on Lake Geneva (Leman): the Casino d’Évian
  • Cassis is east of Marseille, it has a Casino Barrière
I don’t know why Morgane says tes mains, ‘your hands’ (10’08”), when she sees the wheelchair. The only thing I can think of is that she means it’s handy.

The chef de bord comes on the intercom (12’42”). This translates as ‘train master’ in this context, but that sounds weird, so I put ‘conductor.’

Mes gâté means ‘my spoiled one/brat’ (13’04”), which seems an odd thing for Morgane to call the man on his phone (Didier).

RTT, Réduction du Temps de Travail (14’31”), sounds like comp time.

16’30”: de body propre seems to mean ‘clean onesie.’

16’34”: Watch the two officers in the background.

The missing man’s last name is Rexain, but Daphne reads his name in the database as Rexain followed by what sounds like Jet (17’35”). It’s not ‘Jr’ because French doesn’t have that.

Armentières is a town of 26,000 outside urbanized Lille to the west.

Gilles comes up with what sounds like train nerd trivia (19’23”) I can't fully decipher, Même si il a deux changements, comme ca faut qu'ils en place par ligne fin, on sais pas (Even if there are two changes, like that they have to replace with end line, we don't know).

A demi-frere (21’56”) is ‘half-brother’ or ‘stepbrother.’ I’m going with ‘half-.’

It sounds like Morgane replies D’eux? (24’36”) to Théa’s question about Dunkirk. It means ‘of them,’ I think she’s saying ‘What ‘them’ is this coming from?’ Or simply, ‘why?’

25’15”: Morgane’s memory doesn’t match what Clara said at 22’23”.

33’59”: Now Morgane’s memory matches what Clara said at 22’23,” but not her memory at 25’15”

The Service Central des Prélèvements Biologiques, Central Service for the Preservation of Biological Samples (34’39”), is an agency which manages the samples used by the national genetic fingerprinting system.

‘Recreational’ genetic testing is illegal in France for reasons of privacy, and also bioethics (stratifying people by ethnicity/race is unconstitutional). But the law has never been enforced on people who buy testing kits abroad.

35’23”: All of Karadec’s texts to Morgane are:

Good luck for later. Don't hesitate to call me afterward.
Léo is at daycare. He gave Sonia big smiles when he arrived. He seems to be settling in.
If you need me to take over for Chloé from your mother, don't hesitate.
I heard you with Daphne. Is everything okay?

39’21”: I can't find a place called Sernage/s or Cernage/s near Lille. There is what appears to be a collection of villages collectively called Sernages, but it's in central France.

Vauban (40’16”) is in Burgundy, 80 miles west of Geneva.

45’11”: Morgane’s memory doesn’t match what Eliott said at 15’18.”

48’25”: Eliott’s eulogy is Merci pour le chevalier, ‘Thanks for the knight/cowboy.’ I think it’s really cheval lier, which would be ‘horse tie/necktie.’

Au choix when applied to pizza means ‘your choice.’ Since Théa isn’t the one who chose, I’m assuming supplément au choix (51’19”) refers to her ‘usual.’

54’14”: 3919 is the national hotline for women victims of violence.
