Marleau is called to an unusual vocational school, where locksmithing student Antoine Bardet has been found dead beside the scattered pieces of clockmaking student Maëlle’s juried project. The school is run by the Compagnons des Oeuvres (Companions of the Works), a 12th century order.
There are a number of potential suspects, and Marleau immediately focuses on Maëlle. But Bruno the provost is a liar, Mimi the caretaker knows more than she’s saying, and Yoann the thief/builder certainly has motive. And what about Bruno’s secretive wife Sandra, who clearly married down? Is there a cover up? More than one?

Companions of the Works is based on Compagnons du Devoir du Tour de France (Companions of Duty Traveling France), a group which originated during the Middle Ages. They train and network artisans and craftspeople who travel around France practicing their skills.
The Companions’ bastion/citadel is played by the Abbaye Royale du Moncel, a wedding venue in Pontpoint.
Helena Noguerra starred with Stephane Freiss in Meurtres a Collioure.
Fleur Fitoussi plays Maëlle, I expect she’s the latest member of the Fitoussi acting family to emerge. Her dad is Marc Fitoussi, a writer/director. How they’re related to Gregory and Mikael Fitoussi, I have no idea.

Ah ça y est (00’23”) is voila’s weird cousin, it can mean ‘Here you are,’ but also ‘I’ve got it,’ ‘There you go,’ and ‘Here we go.’
The role of the clockwork walker (1’00”) is played by an automate, ‘automaton,’ a kinetic sculpture made in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, a village long associated with the artform.
Marleau remarks that the baby looks like a délinquant en col blanc (4’23”), a ‘white-collar offender/criminal.’ Because both are soft and pudgy?
5’06”: The root of t’chiot/t’chiotte (kid) means ‘shit.’ I've resolved to translate it as ‘shit’ more often— as in ‘you little shit/that little shit.’
6’29”: I guess they didn’t need Marius Colucci (Oscar) this time.
Pièces (8’02” c.f.) are ‘pieces,’ but also ‘coins,’ ‘parts,’ ‘documents,’ and ‘exhibits.’
‘Like in the Middle Ages?’ (8’39”). Marleau’s joke involving the actor Daniel Prévost (Mademoiselle Holmes) has to do, I think, with a prévot being a Middle Ages name for a local magistrate. It’s not much of a joke.
9’24”: The Oeuvres (Works) in the Companions’ name could refer to works-deeds or works-mechanisms.
The term tuyau-de-poêle (stove pipe), ‘incestuous,’ families previously appeared in “Le secret d'Alba.”
C'est pas lui qui a fait la sieste, ‘it’s not him who took the nap,’ clearly means something like ‘he didn’t sleep with his sister.’ But I can’t find a French saying like that, so I’m omitting it.
Marleau uses adieu like one would say Wow (10’44”).
Do we all know what a Prince Albert is (11’21”)?
We don’t get a good look at the painting in Bruno’s office, but it’s an archbishop or bishop. Thus Marleau’s joke about ‘Is that your mom?’
I’m told Toto (11’59”) is a common generic name for a boy, but I assume Marleau is going off the T-O in Antoine.
12’48”: It sounds like Marleau says chaude (hot), and makes a move-aside motion with her hand. I think this is like chaud devant (hot in front, careful, out of the way). So it might even be chaud de’.
Mireille Mathieu (13’29”) is a French singer who debuted in the 60s and has sold over 120 million records. She is of the same stature as Piaf in France, and also enjoyed great fame in Russia as recently as ten years ago.
During a riff on AC/DC, Marleau sings pauvres pécheuses, ‘poor sinners’ (22’02”), with a melody sort-of like the chorus of “Ruff Stuff” from the album Blow Up Your Video.
On dirait que tu peux pas le dicav, ‘It looks like you don’t love her’ (22’06”), is a tough one, I could only find dicav (love) in an article about how young people talk in Lyon.
It sounds like Marleau says chapeau when asked who killed Antoine, but why would she say ‘hat’? I think it’s fâche a peu, ‘[someone] a little angry.’
Marleau says she’s a bombe (bombshell) when she probably means tomb.
23’51”: Here’s a tough one– sinon ce sera deux pâtés, trois ouverts. Pâtés is pâtés/pies/patties/blocks, and ‘two of [them], three open’ means… absolutely nothing to me. Clearly she means something like ‘Don’t be evasive, if you know something I’ll find out.’ So that’s what I’m putting.
Larchouma (24’15”), I don’t know its origin, means ‘deep shame.’
27’08”: As in “Le secret d’Alba,” Marleau again references the Jacques Brel song “Those People.” Here she replaces ‘we don’t think, sir, we don’t think, we pray,’ with ‘we don’t kill each other, sir, no, we don’t kill.’
Pour bouyave, pour jouer au docteur? means ‘To fuck, to play doctor’ (30’04”). Which is redundant in English, so I don’t need the first part.
Remise (30’43”) is ‘discount,’ but it joins hangar in also meaning ‘shed.’
33’24”: I don’t know who Barbara is, or what she has to do with a new prime minister.
37’51”: I added ‘he’ and ‘she’ so as to get around the gendered noun thing.
Noël au scanner, Pâques au cimetière, 'Christmas under the scanner, Easter in the cemetery' (38’22”) is humorist Pierre Desproges’s twist on the proverb ‘Christmas on the balcony, Easter at the embers.’ Desproges died of lung cancer in 1988.
39’57”: It’s not a phone call, so here I’m making the appelle a ‘visitor, visiting.’
Bakchich is ‘bribe’ (41’29”), from baksheesh, which is Asian or African, I don’t know which.
Tranquillou bilou is fun to say, and means easy-peasy/made in the shade.
Studio is ‘studio/bachelor apartment,’ so I’ve jazzed it up a little.
Tête de mort (42’06”) means ‘skull,’ but is slang for hood/thug or yob/yobbo (Br.).
46’02”: Si on était mieux payé on aurait pas besoin de manger means, ‘if we were better paid we wouldn't need to eat.’ It must make sense only in French. The only explanation I can think of is that he’s saying that if they were better paid they wouldn’t need to break for lunch. Although that’s not what they were doing when Bruno came in.
I would assume that carp (46’36”) are no more or less silent than any other fish.
The Trout by Schubert, D.667:
47’42”: At last, Noguerra gets some lines.
Bastion (51’11” and earlier at 44’27”) means ‘stronghold/fortress/bulwark,’ and is used here in the same way that Gendarmes call their stations postes. And as used here the translation also needs to communicate that the place is also an ‘oasis/refuge/retreat.’ 'Post' is too military and ‘Chapter’ isn’t grand enough. ‘Citadel’ is probably the best choice.
I like to think that ‘Swedish design’ (52’06”) is an Ikea reference.
Points noirs is probably supposed to mean ‘moles,’ but ‘blackheads/zits’ is funnier.
Appartement à bisous (60’56”) means ‘apartment of kisses,’ a place where an affair is conducted. I’m translating it as ‘love shack.’
Here’s a new one: Bruno says he used to be un sanguin (63’31”), which comes from the word for blood, and means ‘impulsive.’
The slang negatif means bad/lame/low quality, so Marleau’s comment about Rh O-negatif riffs on sang/blood and must mean she thinks his basic nature hasn’t changed.
Marleau starts to tell Stan about her eventful night: Ouais, et tu attends (67’15”), or ‘Yeah, and you wait.’ I’ve been wondering if the French have ‘wait for it,’ and I think this is it.
Evreux is in Normandy, 24 miles south of Rouen.
The D836 highway (68’37”) runs 6-½-odd miles between Dourdan and almost-Étampes. This is in the Yvelines area south of Paris, while the citadel location is NE of Paris.
‘Will the kid be with us?’, La gosse sera-t-il avec nous?, would have been a much funnier line to end the scene.
The Merry Widow (70’33”) refers to the 1909 operetta about a rich German widow whose money will revert to her native France– unless she can be married off to a German.
73’16”: Marleau sings Aller de ville en ville, ça, je connais bien, ‘Going from city to city, I know that well,’ nearly exactly the opening line of "Vancouver," a 1976 song by Veronique Sanson, whose name Marleau then drops.
Marleau says something that sounds like mou cave (73’57”), which means ‘soft cellar,’ in a situation where she should be saying something like ‘won’t be a minute,’ ‘don’t go anywhere,’ or even ‘talk amongst yourselves.’ On the other hand, mu can mean ‘move’ and– Never mind, I’m omitting it.
Saying a bullet sortie, ‘came out,’ of a gun (74’59”) just sounds weird.
Tic-tac, merci Kodak (76’26”) comes from a 1960s Kodak ad campaign ‘Click-clack, Kodak’. Apparently the Smurfs made the franco-fied form so popular that at one time French people would always say it when taking a picture. Marleau also nearly says this at 31'37”.
The seven Watchwords (79’02”) echo the 7 Virtues of the Compagnons du Devoir: fidelity, honesty, fraternity, courage, generosity, discipline, and patience.
I’ve taken liberties with interpreting the seventh Watchword, le chef-d'oeuvre, literally ‘chief of the work.’ The word means ‘masterpiece’ when applied to the juried projects, but this context implies superiority/preeminence/leadership in the various trades.
84’24”: Marleau says something very clearly here, but I can’t figure out what it is.
Telling the apprentices to put the ladder against the wall (85’57”) is a particularly self-evident and useless order by Marleau.
The Madwoman of Chaillot (89’44”) is a play by George Stefanescu, about a woman who fights against corporations and corruption. It’s very much in the Zone À Défendre spirit.
I can’t find any town called Saint-Roustan (92’54”) or anything close to that.
